Off Oklahoma's Beaten Track

Once known as Indian Territory, Oklahoma is still home to more American Indians than any other state; 39 tribal headquarters and members of at least 67 tribes make their home within its borders.

Among the treasures, visitors will find Native American art galleries, historic sites, powwows, dances and festivals, including the largest Native American festival in the world – Red Earth held every June in Oklahoma City.

Guided tours of the Cheyenne Heritage Trail include a visit to the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site, where Lt. Col. George Custer and the Seventh Cavalry made a surprise attack on the village of Chief Black Kettle, plus related sites and the new Cheyenne Cultural Center.

Oklahoma has more than 300 museums and historic sites, ranging from the unique outdoor windmill museum in Shattuck to Apache warrior Geronimo's grave site at Fort Sill, to art-filled treasures like the Gilcrease and Philbrook museums in Tulsa, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

OKLAHOMA : A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Lying along the fertile plains of the Cimmaron and Arkansas Rivers, the Wild West Territory in north central Oklahoma is as unique and diverse as its history and culture. OKLAHOMA HOTELS

From museums to English gardens, restored theatres to an exhibit of spurs, there’s probably something you haven’t seen before in this part of Oklahoma. And best of all, you will find enough to do for a two-day or week-long trip.

Wild West Territory earned its name when several small communities in north central Oklahoma joined together to provide guidance and quality information to those traveling to and through the area and to ensure that those traveling in this region of Oklahoma have quality experiences. Over the years the group members have changed and today it represents 10 communities and one lake.

Just east of I-35 in far north Oklahoma – almost to Kansas – is Braman, a community steeped in history of the wheat and oil industries. A replica of a wooden oil derrick is a tribute to this heritage. Photos of the early day town and oil fields adorn the walls of the Braman Town Complex.

Take Highway 177 south into Blackwell. The Cherokee Strip Land Rush of 1893 is documented in the Top of Oklahoma Museum housed in the Electric Park Pavilion with artifacts ranging from antique lace to old farm equipment. If you’re into antiquing, you’ll be right at home in Blackwell where their seven antique stores are open seven days a week.

East of Blackwell on Highway 11, then north on Highway 77 takes you to the county seat of Kay County, Newkirk. Here the entire downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places with the largest collection of limestone buildings in Oklahoma. The Newkirk Community Museum has the largest collection of one-room school stage curtains in Oklahoma as well as a restored mail buggy.

From Newkirk, drive south on Highway 77, then east on Highway 11 to the fourth stop in your Wild West Territory tour, Kaw City. Located on a peninsula jutting out into Kaw Lake, Kaw City has a lot to offer with two museums, one dedicated to the history of the community and Kaw Lake and the other to the history of the Kaw Nation, from which the community and lake derive their names. At this end of Kaw Lake is one of the lakes two marinas and beaches, Pioneer Beach and Pioneer Cove Marina.

East of Kaw City on Highway 11 you’ll find an English garden on the prairie in Shidler, the Bivin Garden. These six acres have perennials and annuals in abundance plus spacious lawns, hundreds of trees and shrubs, and several ornamental ponds. The garden is open May through September.

North on Highway 18 from Shidler over the rolling hills of Osage County takes you into the north entrance of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve. A heard of bison freely roam the Preserve and over 757 plant species have been identified. Greater prairie chickens boom in April and breeding birds can be seen in the spring.

Drive through the tallgrass and into the Osage County seat and home of the Osage Tribe, Pawhuska. The Osage Tribal Museum serves as a repository for Osage artifacts and photographs. The area’s history is depicted in the stained glass windows at the Cathedral of the Osage, Immaculate Conception Church. Crafted in Munich, Germany over a century ago, the windows depict the introduction of Catholicism to the Osage.

Continue your journey from Pawhuska west on Highway 60, then south on Highway 18 to Fairfax. View the famous spur collection at the First State Bank. Learn about the area history at the Fairfax Area Historical Genealogy Society.

South on Highway 18 and nestled on the banks of the Arkansas River is the sleepy town of Ralston. A fisherman’s paradise, many sportsmen snag sand bass or channel cat from the swiftly flowing water.

Continue south on Highway 18 to Pawnee, the home of Pawnee Bill. This town pays tribute to its namesake with the annual Pawnee Bill Wild West Show the second, third and fourth Saturdays in June. The show captures the Old West with Calvary charges, horsemanship and Annie Oakley shooting balloons at a full gallop. While you’re there visit the Pawnee Bill Ranch at Blue Hawk Peak. Summers splash for fun at the restored Bath House on Pawnee Lake.

Your final stop in the Wild West Territory area is north and west of Pawnee in Ponca City, well known for the Marland Mansion and Pioneer Woman Museum. Visit Marland’s first home, Marland’s Grand Home and view the 101 Ranch memorabilia. The arts abound with bronze statues like Standing Bear, Pioneer Woman, E.W. Marland, Lew Wentz and other art at the Ponca City Arts Center and Arts Place. Enjoy the outdoors at Kaw and Ponca Lakes or a round of golf at Wentz Camp.
