Virginia Beach: Get Back to Nature

A virtually undiscovered ecological treasure, Virginia Beach is one of the last great saltmarsh habitats on the East Coast.

Virginia Beach’s many state and federal parks offer hiking, birdwatching, biking, canoeing and kayaking.

Some of the most popular parks include: First Landing State Park, a 2,900-acre park that fronts the Chesapeake Bay; Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, a 7,700-acre refuge of beach woodland and marsh; False Cape State Park, a maritime park accessible only by boat; and North Landing River Natural Area Preserve, one of the largest and most significant natural area preserves in Virginia.

No matter where you are, water is never far away in Virginia Beach. The city has 121 navigable miles of waterways that take form in the dozens of rivers, bays, lakes, marsh areas and fingers of water that flow into the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay.

The 30-mile-long Virginia Beach Scenic Waterway is named a Community Millennium Trail.

In Virginia Beach, visitors are invited to “Live the Beach Life!” Offering the classic beach vacation, Virginia Beach maintains a long-standing reputation as a family-friendly oceanfront resort.

Visitors are greeted by a 300-foot wide beach lined by Virginia Beach’s three-mile concrete oceanfront Boardwalk. With a separate bike path, the Boardwalk is ideal for strolling, rollerblading and biking. Entertainment is offered nightly during the summer months.

With 35 miles of waterfront property, Virginia Beach has long been considered a “classic American beach vacation” spot. In Virginia Beach, a total of 14 miles of beach is free and open to the public. In the Virginia Beach resort area, pedestrian beach entrances are easy to find, and parking is ample. If your idea of a "day at the beach" is more relaxed, try a tranquil vacation spot along the scenic Chesapeake Bay. Swimmers will enjoy the bay's protected shallow waters.

After spending lazy days on the beach, the state parks and Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge beckon, enticing visitors to embark on a hiking, kayaking, or biking adventure.

Virginia Beach is home to some of the world’s most pristine natural environments with more than 18,000 acres of state parks and national wildlife refuges. Just a short stroll up the Boardwalk from the Old Coast Guard Station, discover the Atlantic Wildfowl Heritage Museum.

When the sun goes down in Virginia Beach, the fun really begins. The Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater showcases international recording artists while nightclubs in Virginia Beach offer everything from Top 40 and jazz to country, reggae, comedy and the regional favorite – beach music!

And Virginia Beach's music festivals are among the best on the East Coast. Kicking off Memorial Day Weekend, Beach Street USA provides free nightly family entertainment in and around the oceanfront area. Roaming jugglers, musical acts, clowns and dramatic acts add a little Mardi Gras flavor.

Each year, more than 300 juried artists travel to Virginia Beach for one of the nation's most prestigious events, The Boardwalk Art Show and Festival. The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia’s changing exhibits feature painting, sculpture, photography, glass, video and other visual media from internationally acclaimed artists. Additionally, visitors can experience opera, dance and musical performances at venues throughout the region.

For the kids and family there is the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, Ocean Breeze Waterpark and Virginia Beach Amusement Park. You can embark on a fantastic swashbuckling adventure with Pirate Expeditions at Lynnhaven Inlet or Pieces of Eight at Rudee Inlet, or you can get behind the wheel of a race car and rev up your engine at the Motorworld Family Thrill Park.

Fishing, golfing, whale watching, dolphin watching and visits to historic landmarks like the original Cape Henry Lighthouse on the Fort Story military base, built in 1791 and the traditional symbol of Virginia Beach, complete the Beach experience.

Virginia Beach offers seaside hotels with nearly 11,000 rooms with spectacular views and delectable seafood dining experiences from fresh Chesapeake Bay crab cakes and steamed shrimp to stuffed flounder and the local favorite, striped bass (also known as the “rockfish”). With a mild climate year-round, Virginia Beach is the ideal vacation destination for every season.
