Nevada: Carson City

Travelers are almost always surprised when they first see Carson City. It's hard to believe that this little town, with its tree-shaded neighborhoods of Victorian homes and century-old public buildings, isn't a mid-American county seat, somehow transplanted at the base of the Sierra Nevada Range.

Carson City is the state's oldest incorporated city, originally just a crossroads for immigrants heading to California. When one of the West's richest gold and silver strikes was made at nearby Virginia City, it enhanced Carson City's importance.

A natural starting point for a Carson City tour is the State Capitol, located in the center of town.

Because it has long been the seat of power in Nevada, Carson City has a large historic district filled with the homes and buildings of the state's founders.

Carson City also has several notable historic commercial and government buildings, including the former US Mint building. Don't miss the Nevada State Museum or the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

CASINO GETAWAYS NEAR VEGAS

In addition to Las Vegas, Southern Nevada is home to several smaller destinations that also offer world-class casino gaming, celebrity entertainment, hotel-casinos and access to amenities and activities such spas, golf, hiking and extreme and water sports. LAS VEGAS HOTELS

Boulder City, Laughlin, Mesquite and Primm are well-known towns within easy driving distance of Las Vegas.

Those looking for a getaway in an easygoing setting appreciate the relaxed atmosphere offered by these destinations. While enjoying a less frenetic pace, visitors know that plenty of gaming, entertainment and recreational opportunities are within easy reach.

Boulder City is known as a clean, green oasis in the desert. Located about 20 miles from Las Vegas and just a few miles from Hoover Dam's grandeur, Boulder City offers a quiet, relaxed living environment. Boulder City is the only city in Nevada in which gaming is illegal. BOULDER CITY HOTELS

Boulder City is best known as the city that was created for the workers who built Hoover Dam. Today, Boulder City takes pride in its quality recreational facilities such as Boulder City Golf Course, Boulder Creek Golf Club, Bootleg Canyon, Veterans Memorial Park (complete with a 3.5-acre fishing pond), a year-round swimming pool, skydiving services, tennis courts and hiking trails.

Boulder City's proximity to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area makes it a gateway to the largest, cleanest reservoir in the United States, offering endless camping, fishing, boating, water skiing, hiking, biking and photography experiences.

Laughlin, located 90 miles southeast of Las Vegas, fronts the majestic Colorado River. Its hotel-casinos feature mainstays such as giant gaming halls, showrooms and restaurants. Nearly 11,000 hotel/motel rooms are available in Laughlin. Laughlin's resorts offer Nevada players a choice of almost 12,000 slot machines and nearly 400 live table games. LAUGHLIN HOTELS

Seven area golf courses lie within a 65-mile radius of Laughlin. The Flamingo Laughlin offers three tennis courts.

The Colorado River creates a natural setting for sports and recreation. Some hotel-casinos and private vendors operate sightseeing boats that cruise the river; weddings can even be arranged aboard ship. Water taxis operate daily, whisking guests between riverfront properties. Here, too, travelers delight in a variety of river activities such as sport fishing, jet boating, water skiing, canoeing and kayaking.

Those who venture further from the heart of the city have the freedom to explore the Lake Mohave/Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Colorado River, Hoover Dam, Lake Havasu and the London Bridge, Katherine Landing, Katherine Mine, Oatman (Ariz.) on Route 66, the Gold Road Mine Tour north of Oatman or Christmas Tree Pass and Grapevine Canyon, which feature sheer cliff walls and well-preserved Indian petroglyphs.
Mesquite, 80 miles north of Las Vegas near the Utah border, offers indoor and outdoor adventure. Visitors are free to explore the surrounding picturesque desert on horseback, tee off at their choice of world-class golf courses, indulge in fine dining or pamper themselves at luxury spas. MESQUITE HOTELS

Mesquite is a year-round playground in the heart of the Virgin River Valley. Travelers have a choice of nearly 3,000 rooms in four hotels and five motels. Major hotel-casinos, ranging in size from 200 to 1,000 rooms, offer golf, spas, fine dining and action-packed casinos.

The CasaBlanca is a full-service resort with a Cal Olson-designed 18-hole championship golf course and world-class co-ed spa. Oasis Resort Casino Spa has more than 1,000 deluxe rooms and suites, six swimming pools, three golf courses, a health spa, tennis, horseback riding and a gun club. The Virgin River Hotel offers four movie theaters, a 24-lane bowling center, pools, Jacuzzis and live entertainment nightly.

Primm, 35 minutes from Las Vegas on the California-Nevada border, has it all - shopping, dining, gaming, big-name entertainment, golf, one of the world's tallest and fastest roller coasters, theaters, virtual reality rides, water slides and the intriguing vintage cars that once belonged to Bonnie and Clyde, Dutch Schultz and Al Capone.

Primadonna Resorts, owned by MGM Mirage, operates three hotel-casinos in Primm, the first Nevada town encountered by motorists driving in from Southern California on Interstate 15. Whiskey Pete's, Buffalo Bill's and Primm Valley are Primm's hotel-casinos and each is linked to the other by a free monorail system.

The area is home to two Tom Fazio-designed 18-hole golf courses.
