FAMILY FUN IN TEXAS

It's a hot summer day and a splash of cool water crosses your face. You look up and see fluffy, cotton ball-like clouds slowly drift across the big sky. Sounds of children screaming with delight fill the air while they await their next water encounter. Where are you? In Texas, of course! TEXAS HOTELS

However, you could be rafting down the Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, slowly drifting down the Comal River in an inner tube surrounded by family and friends or enjoying a quick, adventurous trip on a rapid-river ride at a Texas amusement park.

There are many ways families can experience Texas together. Other options include visiting some of the state’s theme parks, taking in a sporting event, exploring museums and exhibits or taking a nature walk and discovering native plants and animals.

Spectacular Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park offers the finest rafting and canoeing opportunities along the Rio Grande River.

Big Bend National Park encompasses more than 800,000 acres of spectacular canyons and jungle-like flood plain areas. Rafting, canoeing, and hiking are just a handful of activities groups can enjoy together at the park.

Across the state in the Panhandle sits Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Here, visitors enjoy camping, hiking, and picnicking while taking in the scenic landscape of the park.

For visitors with a little time to kill, there's no better way to spend a Texas afternoon than drifting down the Guadalupe or Comal rivers in Central Texas. The chilly river waters are best enjoyed on a hot day and with as big a group as you can gather.

If it’s thrills you’re after, try one of Texas’ theme parks. Six Flags over Texas in Arlington, Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston and Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio all supply heart-stopping family fun. HOUSTON HOTELS and SAN ANTONIO HOTELS

Cruising to Houston?

Combining water with an amusement park is the idea behind Schlitterbahn, where you can have the hottest, coolest time in Texas. Rated the best waterpark in the nation by the Travel Channel, Schlitterbahn has its original location in New Braunfels, and opened Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island last summer. Schlitterbahn has something for every member of the family including tube rides, water slides, hot tubs, pools, river rapids, and a children's playground.

Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston draws water enthusiasts to its neighboring water park, Water World, while Six Flags over Texas in Arlington makes a splash with nearby Hurricane Harbor.

Finally, when all you need is a good breeze to beat the heat, try climbing aboard the new Steel Eel roller coaster at SeaWorld San Antonio – it's the only hyper-coaster in the Southwest.

Learning may not be on a vacation agenda, but most kids can't help but walk away a little smarter after visiting any of the children's museums in Texas. Some of the Texas cities that offer children's museums include Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Lubbock, Midland, San Angelo, San Antonio, Texarkana, and Tyler. Each uses hands-on exhibits to engage children's interest in a variety of subjects.

The Fort Worth Zoo created an eight-acre Texas Wild! area that highlights the abundant, unique, and varied wildlife of Texas. FORT WORTH HOTELS

Kids and adults can reach for the stars at the McDonald Observatory in West Texas. Telescopes at the observatory offer a remarkable view of the stars and planets in our solar system. The site for the telescopes was chosen because of the high ratio of cloudless nights and the distance from artificial lights. Star parties are held on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights and are open to the public.
