 THE GREAT FACES OF SOUTH DAKOTA South Dakota's famous parks, mountains and memorials, the Lewis and Clark Trail, South Dakota's history and heritage combine to provide visitors with an unforgettable travel experience. SOUTH DAKOTA HOTELS Heading the attractions is the world's greatest mountain carving, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, that epic sculpture of the faces of four exalted American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The natural wonders are seemingly endless. South Dakota's Black Hills with their unique rock formations and mysterious caverns, provide the backdrop to Mt. Rushmore. Bison roam free in Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park. The steep canyons, jagged spires, and the bands of colorful rocks of Badlands National Park are blended with mixed-grass prairie. Jewel Cave is the second-longest cave in the world and Crazy Horse Memorial, the world's largest mountain sculpture, is a work in progress. Beyond these natural and man-made phenomena are a string of fascinating attractions. There's Deadwood which sprang to life during the Gold Rush of 1876 when folks like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane walked its streets. Today, Bill, Jane and other colorful characters are buried in Deadwood's own Boot Hill, Mount Moriah Cemetery. DEADWOOD HOTELS Historic preservation efforts, funded by limited-stakes gaming, have restored downtown Deadwood to its turn-of-the-century character. The entire city has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Right in Deadwood, you'll discover quaint Victorian homes, excellent museums, a gold mine tour and historic cemetery that serves as the eternal home to Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, unique shopping, living history re-enactments, quality entertainment, exquisite gaming halls, and the largest historic restoration project in the United States. Deadwood hosts special events year-round, from the rowdy Wild Bill Hickok Days in June, the historic Days of '76 celebration in late July to the annual Deadwood Jam in September. Historic Fort Sisseton was established in 1864 on the Dakota frontier. It was abandoned in 1889. Fourteen of the fort's original buildings still stand, making it one of the nation's best-preserved military forts. The soldiers' barracks, with its rows of tidy bunks, now serves as the park's Visitor Center. Exhibits address the fort's colorful history. There's De Smet, the Little Town on the Prairie. Author Laura Ingalls Wilder moved to De Smet in 1879 at the age of 12. The town would later serve as the setting for five of her books. The Ingalls family spent their first Dakota winter living in the railroad surveyor's house, which Laura referred to as a "two-story mansion". Charles Ingalls later built a home in De Smet. Visitors can take guided tours of both homes, which are filled with the family's treasures. About 26,000 years ago, mammoths came to this ancient sinkhole at Hot Springs to drink. The creatures became trapped in the slippery-sided pool and drowned. To date, the bones of 52 Columbian and woolly mammoths have been uncovered during ongoing excavation at The Mammoth Site. Guided tours and educational programs are offered year-round. Redlin Art Center in Watertown features more that 130 original oil paintings by well-known artist Terry Redlin. Known for his ability to capture on canvas childhood dreams and life in rural America, the "Master of Memories" has touched the hearts of collectors for more that 25 years. The State Capitol, Pierre, was completed in 1910 and a major restoration of the Capitol was completed in 1989, returning the building to its original grandeur. Features such as marble staircases, Victorian leaded glass, terrazzo floor and scagliola columns give the building its stately character. The Capitol is open 8am-10pm daily. PIERRE HOTELS The Capitol complex encompasses an artesian lake. A Visitor Center overlooks Capitol Lake, where a perpetual flame burns within a fountain as a memorial to South Dakota's veterans. Washington Pavilion of Arts and Science in Sioux Falls offers art and science experiences for all ages. SIOUX FALLS HOTELS The Kirby Science Discovery Center has three floors of hands-on science exhibits, the Visual Arts Center encompasses seven galleries of changing exhibits, and the Husby Performing Arts Center features Broadway musicals, concerts, dance and theatrical performances, and is also home to the South Dakota Symphony. And then there is the World's Only Corn Palace, in Mitchell. This unusual structure, with its turrets and towers, features murals created with multi-colored ears of corn and bundles of grains and grasses. It takes more than 3,000 bushels of corn to decorate the Corn Palace's exterior walls. Local farmers grow the corn. Each year, workers replace the existing murals with new designs. Following an artist's sketch, workers saw ears of corn in two (lengthwise) and nail them into place on the building.
