From the rolling prairies and glittering lakes to the Badlands and its legendary Black Hills, South Dakota is a haven for fisherman, hunters, golfers and skiers alike. It has more than 1,100 square miles of water and a fishing season that never closes; hunters have access to nearly 5 million acres of public land. The beauty of South Dakota's varied landscape is readily apparent when driving through the state. But a ride in a car can't compare to the sights that await visitors on the 664-miles of South Dakota hiking and biking trails. The faces of four American presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln - are carved from Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota's Black Hills. Based for a holiday in Pierre, South Dakota's capital, visitors can enjoy the outdoor recreation on the Missouri River and the rolling hills and prairies of the Great Plains. There is fishing, hunting, birding, boating and swimming, hiking and biking within easy distance of every motel and hotel. Rapid City has many attractions and activities, and it is a hub location for all the things to see and do throughout the Black Hills area: The Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, the Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Black Hills National Forest with its abundant wildlife. The Washington Pavilion, a cultural center for the region, offers art and science experiences for all ages in Sioux Falls, the gateway to the Plains. The best way to see Sioux Falls and the Falls of the Big Sioux River at Falls Park is on the Sioux Falls Trolley. Children can let their hair down at the Wild Water West Waterpark Family Amusement Park. Sioux Falls has 4,000 hotel and motel rooms. SOUTH DAKOTA HOTELS ATTRACTIONS Aberdeen Visitors can follow the yellow brick road to Storybook Land, a magical theme park for their favorite storybook and fairy tale characters come to life. For a look into the past, there’s the Dacotah Prairie Museum. ABERDEEN HOTELS Black Hills and Badlands These are the legendary Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming, an oasis of pine-clad mountains on the Great Plains, home of Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. Its a place where bison and wild horses still roam free. It is the home of Badlands National Park and the Great Sioux Nation. Brookings The State Agricultural Heritage Museum here is dedicated to preserving the states rich agricultural history and rural heritage. The Brookings Arts Council is located in the Community Cultural Center. Visitors are welcome at South Dakota State University's McCrory Gardens. The Akta Lakota Museum at St. Joseph's Indian School ("Akta Lakota" means "to honor the people") is an educational outreach of the school that strives to preserve and promote Sioux culture. Crazy Horse Memorial Located in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. The collection at the Indian Museum of North America speaks eloquently to present and future generations about the daily life of the American Indian. Custer is only minutes away from Mount Rushmore and the carving of Crazy Horse. Nearby is the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument, the third longest cave in the world, and Custer State Park. The Heritage Village and Four Mile Old West Town are Old West towns. The National Museum of Wood Carving has a large collection of carvings by a Disneyland animator. Hill City Visitors can see the Black Hills on an 1880 Train/Black Hills Central Railroad steam engine. HILL CITY HOTELS Hot Springs The Mammoth Site has one of the world's greatest fossil treasures. Wind Cave National Park is one of the world's longest and most complex caves. HOT SPRINGS HOTELS Keystone "The Home of Mt. Rushmore", located only two miles from Mt.
