SAVANNAH: A SOUTHERN BELLE

Welcome to Savannah, the sultry and mysterious "Belle" of the Southeastern coast. SAVANNAH HOTELS

Savannah captivates the suitors that come to call with her natural beauty, eccentric charm and traditional Southern Hospitality – because she is genteel, gracious and captivating.

The first to be seduced by this saucy siren was her founder General James Edward Oglethorpe. Oglethorpe and the 120 travelers of the good ship "Anne" landed on a bluff high along the Savannah River in February 1733.

Oglethorpe named the Thirteenth and final American colony Georgia after England's King George II and Savannah became its first city.

Oglethorpe laid the city out in a series of grids that allowed for wide open streets intertwined with shady public squares and parks. Today, the Historic District is a 2.5 mile walking district full of bistros, quaint shops, green squares and grand architecture.

General Oglethorpe's vision of southern hospitality and a genteel way of life is still alive in the faces of those who call Savannah home.

Visit the past by re-living the first days of the colony at one of the area's only surviving examples of plantation life. Take a picturesque drive up the Avenue of the Oaks to Wormsloe Historic Site and journey back in time to see how Savannah's first settlers tamed the new wilderness.

Track battles from the War of 1812 and the Civil War at Old Fort Jackson, Fort Screven and Fort Pulaski. Go back in time and visit eighteenth and nineteenth-century architectural excellence at the King-Tisdell Cottage, Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, Andrew Low House, Davenport House and Owens-Thomas House.

Discover Savannah’s many museums to learn about the contributions of Africans to the American tapestry at the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum or visit one the South's oldest art museums, the Telfair Museum of Art.

Her streets are waiting to be discovered at your own leisurely pace by foot, by trolley, by sea or by majestic steed and coachman tour guide whose carriage awaits to fulfill your inquisitiveness.

Savannah also has more than 20 tour companies. With a wide array of tours to meet your interests; Negro Heritage, Civil War, eco-tourism, architectural and haunted history.

To sample the true charisma of Savannah, visitors must walk the city streets and visit her charming squares. Massive oaks, with branches veiled in Spanish moss announce you are in the true Old South.

Savannah is home to a multitude of cosmopolitan award-winning restaurants and lowcountry cuisine. Excite your taste buds with a bowl of creamy lobster bisque, a sweet pecan pie, a crispy platter of fried chicken, fresh collard greens, a hot bowl of grits or a delicate scored flounder tempered with an apricot glaze with baby carrots and wild rice.

If down home favorites are not your forte and it's international flare you seek, Savannah is filled with eclectic restaurants featuring themes like Italian, Asian, Southwestern, Caribbean, French, English, Irish, Greek and Moroccan. We have a restaurant to satisfy everyone's pallet.

Savannah's historic district includes national award-winning hotels where service is their business and luxury abounds. Several offer riverfront views and suites while being nestled in the heart of the historic district making them convenient for your evening stroll.

The Southside of Savannah, home to two malls and a blend of shopping plazas with a choice of national brands.

In the Historic District, the cobblestones that line River Street are ready for visitors to explore the candy shops, art galleries and a number of nautical-themed apparel and gift stores.

Move a couple of blocks south from River Street to City Market where art studios, galleries and specialty shops fill the two-block space. Discover Broughton and Bull streets, the heart of Savannah's antique district, where treasures of old are awaiting your unearthing.

Savannah is part of the 112 miles of Georgia’s Colonial Coast where white sand and blue sky are complemented by an easy-paced round of golf, wild horses on a tranquil beach, colorful shrimp boats in a golden marsh, explorations through black swamp waters, or exquisite sampling of low-country cooking.

Along the entire Georgian coast, from historic Savannah to picturesque St. Mary’s, an exciting range of history waits to be explored.

Tybee Island is only 20 minutes from Savannah's Historic District. Sand, sea and history along with great dinning and charming rustic accommodations are perched on the brink of the Atlantic Ocean. Tybee Island and the Low Country play host to a variety of wildlife refuges and gaming facilities. The outdoors are waiting to be explored.
