Consistently recognized as one of the leading family vacation destinations worldwide for families with children of all ages, San Diego offers a near-perfect climate, a variety of family-friendly activities, world-class attractions and special events throughout the year. Whether families wish to swim, surf, snorkel, play volleyball or just lie in the sun, there’s a stretch of sand for everyone along San Diego’s 70 miles of pristine beaches. San Diego is known for popular family attractions including the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park, LEGOLAND California, and SeaWorld San Diego. San Diego also offers the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Knott’s Soak City U.S.A., Belmont Park with its Giant Dipper roller coaster, and much more. The historic heart of downtown San Diego is the Gaslamp Quarter, founded in 1867 and home to many beautiful Victorian buildings that have since earned historic status. However, back in the late 1800s, San Diego was the Wild West and the legendary Wyatt Earp ran three gambling halls in this notorious “red light” district. Today, excitement has returned to this lively dining and entertainment district with more than 100 restaurants, 35 nightclubs and bars, and 100 retail shops. For lovers of arts and culture, San Diego features more than 90 museums, historic sites and monuments, with Balboa Park often referred to as the “Smithsonian of the West". Its 1,400 acres encompass 15 museums, the Japanese Friendship Garden, lush gardens, and the Tony Award ® -winning Old Globe Theater. San Diego is one of the nation’s top theater producing towns; in addition to the Old Globe, San Diego is home to the Tony Award ®-winning La Jolla Playhouse along with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Opera and a kaleidoscope of year-round special events, dance and musical performances. San Diego is extremely popular for outdoor recreational enthusiasts with a wide range of activities for everyone to enjoy. There are 92 golf courses throughout the County, and sports enthusiasts can enjoy sailing, swimming, surfing, scuba diving, jet skiing, snorkeling, bicycling, running, walking, camping, rock climbing, and mountain hiking and biking throughout the year. Other San Diego options include world-class shopping, casino gaming, exploring East County's mountains and deserts, North County’s wineries, and day tripping to Mexico. From beachfront to inland properties, San Diego is home to a variety of luxurious four-star and four-diamond resorts and hotels that offer a multitude of amenities. The Mediterranean-style village La Jolla, curved along the blue Pacific, is considered the “jewel” of San Diego. One of the most sought-after vacation destinations in Southern California, La Jolla offers luxurious and historic hotels and resorts; fine dining with breathtaking ocean views; retail shopping that rivals northern neighbors Rodeo Drive and South Coast Plaza; sophisticated, world-class arts and culture, and a strikingly-beautiful setting complemented by endless outdoor recreational activities. Bordered by Mexico in the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the vast Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in the east and the wine country to the north, San Diego County offers visitors a panoramic variety of things to see and do. Hidden jewels include the turn-of-century mining town, Julian, and Borrego Springs, a desert town of 3,000 residents and no traffic lights. For adventure travelers, the region offers diving in Wreck Alley, shark diving adventures, coastal kayaking, sky sailing, hot air ballooning, desert jeep tours, thrilling rides in vintage WWII combat aircraft and more.
