Skiing Salt Lake

Ski Salt Lake is a partnership between the Salt Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau and four Salt Lake County ski resorts – Alta Ski Area, Brighton Resort, Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort, and Solitude Mountain Resort.

They work together to brand Salt Lake as a ski and snowboard destination.

Following the success of Salt Lake's role in the Olympics and capitalizing on the city's proximity to the slopes, the partners selected "Ski Salt Lake" as its name.

Ski Salt Lake resorts are 35 minutes from downtown and 40 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport.

The canyons, which lie in the southeast corner of the Salt Lake Valley, are side by side and are named Big and Little Cottonwood. Brighton and Solitude resorts are in Big Cottonwood Canyon, and Alta and Snowbird sit at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

A lucky combination of geographic features gives the Ski Salt Lake resorts the driest, softest, most skiable snow in the world.

Salt Lake combines the cosmopolitan amenities of a major metropolitan area with the wholesome friendliness of a small, western city.

Fast becoming one of USA’s foremost vacation destinations, Salt Lake retains its essence as an unspoiled, family-friendly destination for skiing, snowboarding, shopping, rock climbing, mountain biking, or sightseeing.

A beautiful, safe and vibrant community, Salt Lake City is just a few hours drive from ten national parks.

Nestled between the Great Salt Lake and a dramatic Rocky Mountain range, Salt Lake’s broad streets end with dramatic views of majestic peaks. Canyons serpentine through the city’s neighborhoods, creating a park-like atmosphere all year. In the spring, mountain hills are adorned with wildflowers and impromptu waterfalls.

During summer months, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking are just minutes away. A blaze of brilliant foliage erupts on canyon walls in autumn. When the snow falls, visitors flock to the Ski Salt Lake™ resorts like Alta, Brighton, Snowbird, and Solitude just 35 minutes from downtown. Daily sunshine, low humidity, and mountain breezes combine for a comfortable year-round climate.

Salt Lake is the gateway to western national parks, including Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef, the north rim of the Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Monument Valley, Yellowstone, and Zion. America’s Dead Sea, the Great Salt Lake, offers sailing, and nightly dinner cruises in waters eight times saltier than the Pacific Ocean.

Salt Lake is a diverse community embracing a wide spectrum of religious, cultural, and ethnic groups. While preparing to welcome the world to the Winter Olympics of 2002, Salt Lake evolved into one of the West’s most spectacular destinations. Olympic excitement fueled a major renaissance in nightlife, attractions, shopping and mountain resorts.

Salt Lake County has more than 17,500 hotel rooms. Major hotels include the swanky Hotel Monaco and the classic corporate Salt Lake City Marriott City Center.

Salt Lake boasts a vibrant nightlife with more than 1,000 restaurants, brewpubs, dance clubs and private bars. Salt Lake is also home to a diverse mix of nightspots including dance clubs, country/western saloons, jazz clubs, sports bars, neighborhood hangouts, martini clubs, techno-dance spots, cigar bars, and alternative lifestyle clubs.

The city also offers a wide spectrum of cultural options with nationally acclaimed symphony, opera, theater, modern dance, and ballet. Outdoor plazas host concerts and festivals in summer months, and convert city fountains to ice-skating rinks in the winter.

Salt Lake is a western shopping oasis. Two major shopping malls sit in the heart of the city with hundreds of national brand stores. The Gateway is a multi-story, open-air, upscale shopping district three blocks long.

Salt Lake also offers shopping with a historic twist. Trolley Square, a block of enclosed trolley barns dating back to the 19th century, is filled with high-end boutiques, specialty shops, upscale national chains, restaurants and clubs. The shops at Gardner Village are housed in dozens of pioneer-era homes clustered around a 19th-century flour mill just fifteen minutes south of the city center via Interstate 15.
