Portland: The Beer Facts

• Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world. There are 23 craft breweries in Portland; 34 in the Portland metro area.

• According to the Oregon Brewers Guild, no matter where you are in Portland, you're never more than 15 minutes from a craft brewery.

• Among "hopheads" (beer lovers), Portland’s nicknames include "Beervana," "Brewtopia" and "Munich on the Willamette."

• Portland is home to the nation’s best-attended beer bash: the Oregon Brewers Festival. More than 50,000 people enjoy this annual riverfront event, which takes place the last full weekend of July.

• Portland has a 3 percent market share of the more than 1,400 breweries and brewpubs in the United States.

• July is American Beer Month.

• In the sun, hop vines can grow up to a foot a day. The vines will only grow clockwise around a guide wire.

• Prohibition lasted 13 years, 10 months, 19 days, 17 hours and 32 minutes. But who was counting?

Portland is a city of parks, outdoor artwork, coffee carts, microbreweries, bridges and bookstores, of sumptuous dining and splendid hotels, all easily accessed and linked by a superb light-rail system.

Within a short drive of Portland's downtown core natural wonders like the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood (a dormant volcano with year-round skiing), the Willamette Valley Wine Country and the rugged Oregon coastline await visitors.

For more than a decade, Portland has been known as the epicenter of America’s craft-brewing renaissance. With 23 breweries in the city limits and 34 breweries in the metro area, Portland is the USA's microbrew industry leader. It boasts more microbreweries, brewpubs and outlets (pubs offering local microbrews on tap) per capita than any other American city.

Tours of craft brewpubs are usually scheduled in the evening with guides taking you to three breweries for tours of the facilities, beer tastings and information. Visitors can also take occasional bus tours of Portland's bars.

Just a reminder that it is not all beer in Portland – with more than 1.5-million books and occupying an entire city block, Powell’s in Portland is the USA's largest independent bookstore.

Portland’s vibrant, diverse family of neighborhood districts have distinct personalities.

Downtown Portland offers visitors a wide variety of shops, professional services, restaurants, housing, entertainment venues, museums and parks. Pioneer Courthouse Square serves as Portland's town square.

Then there's the artistic Pearl District with its galleries and cobblestone paved streets, sophisticated Nob Hill/Northwest with its boutiques, cafes and various theater offerings and a glimpse into the city’s rich architectural past, or the bohemian Hawthorne District, home to funky shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs There is also Historic Sellwood with its antique shops and laid-back Multnomah Village.

The most mysterious of Portland’s neighborhoods is Old Town/Chinatown. Below the streets of this river district, the Portland Underground (or “Shanghai Tunnels” as they are commonly known) serves as a reminder of the days when unsavory characters shanghaied thousands of unsuspecting sailors, loggers and ranchers. On street level, Old Town/Chinatown is a bustling arts and entertainment district and the site of some of Portland’s best jazz spots and art galleries.

Portland is alive with attractions for the family – like the interactive Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (home of the Hunt for Red October submarine), the Oregon Maritime Center & Museum, and Oregon Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The Portland Children’s Museum is part of a rich group of attractions in Washington Park – the Oregon Zoo, the Forest Discovery Center, the International Rose Test Garden, the Japanese Garden and Hoyt Arboretum.

Portland’s parks are its gems and few sparkle as luminously as downtown’s South Park Blocks. The city’s major cultural institutions and elegant high-rise residences border the park, prompting its newly appointed name – the Cultural District.

A stroll through this stately neighborhood offers block after block of ancient elms, rich green lawns and inviting park benches. Flanking this green space are an historic auditorium (the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall), a modern theater complex (the New Theatre Building of the Portland Center for the Performing Arts), a nationally recognized art museum (Portland Art Museum), the Oregon Historical Society and the campus of Portland State University.

A trip down Oregon’s rugged coastline can include stops in historic Astoria, the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies; Cannon Beach, loved by shoppers and art collectors; the Tillamook Cheese Factory; Depoe Bay, a popular whale-watching site; Newport, home to the Oregon Coast Aquarium; and Sea Lion Caves in Florence.
