New Hampshire: Beaches & History

The best-known New Hampshire beach, Hampton Beach, is a summer classic, a boardwalk-and-arcades type hub of activity.

Jenness Beach and Wallis Sands State Beach in Rye, North Hampton State Beach, and Sandy Beach in New Castle are family-friendly sandy spots.

On the lakes, the beaches at Ellacoya, Silver Lake, Kingston, Sunapee and Wadleigh State Parks also offer services such as canoe and kayak rentals.

Odiorne Point State Park, with its ocean views of Whaleback Light and Wentworth By the Sea, is a nature preserve that is a favorite for birdwatchers, kayakers and families.

The Seacoast Science Center offers hands-on sea-life and guided tours of the local tidal pools.

History buffs will enjoy a visit to the American Independence Museum in Exeter, especially during the Revolutionary War Festival encampment re-enactment in July.

Shaker Village is a 400-acre living museum showcasing Shaker life.

Celebrate the Centennial of Teddy Roosevelt's Nobel Peace Prize at the Portsmouth Historical Society's John Paul Jones House Museum in Portsmouth.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

From the Seacoast to the peaks of Mount Washington (the highest peak in the Northeast), the opportunity for sport and play in New Hampshire is unlimited. NEW HAMPSHIRE HOTELS

Add the natural beauty of the landscape, combined with sightings of the local wildlife population, and the experience is unrivaled. Leisurely strolls along a beachfront trail, rounds of golf or kayaking on a wide open lake – you can do it all here.

There are ample opportunities for learning new skills such as rock climbing or boating, and guided group mountain hikes are also popular excursions.

The State of New Hampshire boasts more than 65 state parks, each as unique and spectacular as the regions themselves. Within these parks are opportunities to learn more about the history of New Hampshire, and the plant and animal life that live here. Many of the parks are open for recreation in all seasons; all are open in the summer.

Franconia Notch State Park's 6,440-acres are nestled in the deep valley between the towering peaks of Franconia and Kinsman mountain ranges. Swimming, camping, scenic driving, picnicking, biking and hiking on trails of the Appalachian system are all available here. The Flume is a natural gorge extending 800-feet at the base of Mount Liberty. Granite walls rise 70 to 90-feet and are 12 to 20-feet apart.

The sprawling 780,000-acre White Mountain National Forest provides outstanding scenery and outdoor recreation opportunities. It offers miles of multi-use recreational trails, as do the state parks and state forests.

Outdoor adventures and skills workshops are scheduled year-round at the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and Lodge. Activities for beginners, experts, kids and grandparents are planned every day.

Great Glen Trails’ state-of-the-art facility is centered on 1,100 acres at the base of Mount Washington. Programs and rentals for mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking and fly fishing are available for all ages and abilities.

To play a challenging and exciting round of golf is the goal for all who love the sport. Add the spectacular view of New Hampshire, and a day on the links becomes a glorious adventure. There are over 80 courses around the state to choose from, including eight designed by legendary golf course architect Donald Ross.

Wildlife in New Hampshire consists of a mixture of beautiful, graceful, and some rather imposing animals. A leggy moose drinking from a pond, the awakening trill of a loon, whales on the water and eagles in the air – New Hampshire is full of experiences and discoveries like these.

Whether your day consists of a guided hike in the Presidential Range, a lift-serviced mountain bike ride, or exploring the region with friends and family, New Hampshire is a great place to experience the outdoors.

The Mount Washington Resort at Bretton Woods is perfect for a getaway in the White Mountains. BRETTON WOODS HOTELS

From hands-on cooking courses by award-winning chefs to expert instruction for honing fly fishing and golf skills, to learning the thrill of rock climbing on local crags, to engaging workshops in the arts of photography or painting, there is an enrichment experience for every taste.

A full daily roster of workshops and lectures, including shutterbug hikes, mountain biking, nature hikes, geocaching treasure hunts, and a host of family fun activities will complement the wide variety of in-depth schools being offered.

The daily activities schedule includes an abundance of clinics and lectures on recreation, local history and arts and crafts, and fine living topics such as the secrets of single malt scotch whiskey. Visiting musicians and artisans frequent the summer schedule to round out the cultural offerings at the Resort.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be delighted by the extensive list of complimentary recreational options available to Resort Passport holders, including use of a dozen red clay tennis courts (reservations recommended); use of the manicured 9-hole putting green; swimming in any of the Resort’s four pools, including the Hotel’s indoor pool; use of the Hotel’s new fitness facility as well as the Bretton Woods Sports Club – complete with exercise and weight rooms, racquetball courts, pool, steam rooms and Jacuzzi; family games including croquet, badminton, bocce, volleyball, horseshoes, and kite flying; guided hikes and nature walks and Nordic Walking.
