Tourists are flocking to the rugged coastline, snow-dusted mountains, dramatic river canyons and vineyards of Oregon. Its treasure chest of natural resources includes 13 national forests, more than 240 state parks, over 1,700 lakes, and more than 112,000 miles of waterways and rivers. Some of Oregon's 19 US Fish and Wildlife Service refuges are dedicated to protecting the region's native wildlife including birds, antelope, mountain goats, bears and bighorn sheep. The historic Columbia River Highway, with the many motels and hotels alongside, is the best way to view the beautiful vistas and waterfalls of this area. Oregon’s capital city, Salem, is nestled within the beautiful Willamette Valley. Founded in 1841, Salem is one of the west’s oldest cities. Salem’s two historic home districts are near the Mission Mill Museum and contain a significant number of homes that have been carefully maintained. Bordering the Willamette River is Salem’s historic downtown district. From shopping to wine and garden tours to gaming to outdoor pursuits, there’s something for everyone. The Willamette Valley region is filled with diverse venues and attractions that appeal to a wide range of travel interests. Portland’s districts have distinct personalities, which is unusual for a relatively small city. The artistic Pearl District, sophisticated Nob Hill and bohemian Hawthorne are just a few members of Portland’s family of neighborhoods. The most mysterious of Portland’s neighborhoods is Old Town/Chinatown. Below the streets of this river district, the Portland Underground (or “Shanghai Tunnels” as they are commonly known) serves as a reminder of the days when unsavory characters shanghaied thousands of unsuspecting sailors, loggers and ranchers. Downtown Portland offers visitors a wide variety of motels, hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, museums and parks. OREGON HOTELS ATTRACTIONS Albany Museums, antique shopping and over 700 historic buildings in three nationally registered historic districts. ALBANY HOTELS Ashland Surrounded by mountain peaks and known for skiing at Mt Ashland, and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the nation’s oldest and largest rotating repertory.
