Pick up the trail of America’s greatest legends like Lewis and Clark, Sakakawea, Custer, Sitting Bull and Theodore Roosevelt in North Dakota and follow in their footsteps. North Dakota has many opportunities in state parks for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, boating, skiing or snowmobiling, golfing on its 116 golf courses, wildlife viewing and horseback riding. It has multiple cross-country ski trails and legendary fishing and hunting. The State Capitol building in the capital Bismarck is known as the "Skyscraper on the Prairie". The Bismarck-Mandan area features many historic stops, such as Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, the Heritage Center and the state Capitol. Visitors can take in Dakota Zoo, the scenic Missouri River, Five Nations Art, the Lewis & Clark Riverboat, and the Fort Lincoln Trolley. For those in North Dakota for the outdoor life there is birding, biking, hunting, fishing, skiing, or boating in Bismarck. Local motels and hotels offer 2,400 rooms within 10 minutes of the airport. The Fargo metro area, including its sister city, Moorhead, Minnesota, are a great weekend destination, with excellent motels and hotels, restaurants, shopping, golf, unique attractions, year-round festivals, concerts, theater and sporting events. Just a few interesting stops include Bonanzaville USA, a picturesque restored pioneer village consisting of 40 museums on 15 acres that shows life in 1880s Dakota Territory; Fargo Air Museum, located in a large hanger filled with aviation legends; Plains Art Museum; and for baseball fans, the Roger Maris Museum. NORTH DAKOTA HOTELS ATTRACTIONS Abercrombie Fort Abercrombie, now a State Historic Site, was besieged by the Sioux for six weeks in 1862. Visitors can discover the legacy of the frontiersmen, Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, at the North Dakota Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. |

The Ukrainian Cultural Institute is a living tribute to the heritage of the Ukrainian people who settled in North Dakota. Elgin The Medicine Rock State Historic Site preserves an area of religious significance to Indian peoples. Fargo/West Fargo Bonanzaville has 15 acres of historic buildings, ranging from a sod house to a church, court house and country store. Other attractions include the Children's Museum at Yunker Farm which offers hands-on discovery, Thunder Road Family Fun Park, the state-of-the-art Red River Zoo, and the Roger Maris Museum which traces the career of legendary Fargo athlete Roger Maris. FARGO HOTELS Fort Totten Fort Totten State Historic Site, which dates from the era of Indian wars in the 1860s is an "outdoor museum" of 17 original historic buildings. Sully's Hill National Game Preserve is one of four refuges managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for American bison and elk. Fort Yates The Sitting Bull Burial State Historic Site marks the original grave of the Hunkpapa Sioux leader. Grand Forks Here the Heritage Village preserves the history of the northern Red River Valley with weekend tours of pioneer buildings. The Grand Cities (Grand Forks, ND, & East Grand Forks, MN) are also home to many art and entertainment venues at the Chester Fritz Auditorium, Empire Arts Center, and the ND Museum of Art . GRAND FORKS HOTELS Jamestown Midway between Bismarck (the state capitol) and Fargo (the state's largest city), Jamestown is home to the National Buffalo Museum with "White Cloud", a rare albino buffalo, Frontier Village, and a reconstructed old west town. Visitors can travel for a week on the authentic Fort Seaward Wagon Trails. Other attractions include the North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame. JAMETSOWN HOTELS Killdeer The hub of Cowboy Country, and gateway to the Killdeer Mountains which features the Medicine Hole, the Little Missouri Primitive State Park, the Badlands Trail Rides and the Lewis & Clark Trail. Medora Historic Medora is in the heart of the Badlands. Visitors can enjoy the Medora Musical at the Burning Hills Amphitheater; tour the Chateau deMores, the historic 28-room home of the French cattle baron and his wife, Medora; or try the Maah Daah Hey Trail a 100-mile hiking, horseback and mountain bicycle trail that winds its way through the wilderness of the North Dakota Badlands. Minot the largest Scandinavian festival in North America, the Norsk Høstfest in Minot, is regarded in Northern Europe as an outstanding resource for authentic, Old-World Scandinavian lore, craftsmanship and entertainment. MINOT HOTELS Ransom Fort Ransom State Historic Site marks the location of a 200-man military post built in 1867. Although building locations are still clearly discernible, nothing else remains. Richardton Assumption Abbey, a Bavarian Romanesque structure, was completed in 1909. Rugby The Geographical Center of North America, with the exact spot marked by a cairn at the junction of U.S. Highway 2 and North Dakota Highway 3. Attractions are the Pioneer Village and Museum, the Pierce County Courthouse, the Great Northern Railway Depot, and The Victorian Dress Museum. RUGBY HOTELS Stanton The Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site has prehistoric and historic archeological objects recovered from park sites relating to Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Indians. Washburn Fort Mandan Historic Site was the winter home of the Lewis and Clark Expedition 1804-05. The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center takes visitors on a "voyage of discovery". Williston There are two historic sites here: Fort Buford, a site that preserves remnants of a vital frontier plains military post, and Fort Union Trading Post.
