NEW YORK HOTELS New York has the most state parks, recreation areas and natural areas in the United States. With more than 200 state parks and historical sites, New York has the most comprehensive network of parkland in the United States. Take advantage of the Empire Passport to save money on frequent park visits. More than 60 million people visit New York’s parks annually to take advantage of waterfalls, gorges, lakes, woodlands and mountains. The Empire Passport provides visitors with access to most of the state parks and all 50 of the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) forest preserve areas, as well as boat launch sites, arboretums and park preserves. It pays for itself in just eight visits. Some of New York’s notable state parks include: • Wellesley Island State Park: Located on the St. Lawrence River, Wellesley Island was named one of the America’s top educational and historical facilities in 2005 by Reserve America, specifically for its Minna Anthony Common Nature Center. This 600-acre compound includes eight miles of trails and a 3500-square foot natural history museum. The park features secluded wilderness sites nestled along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, accessible only by foot or boat. This rustic paradise offers excellent fishing – particularly for muskellunge in the fall. • Bethpage State Park: Long Island’s Bethpage State Park is best known for its five world-class golf courses. Visitors also head to the park to use its picnic facilities, bridle paths, hiking and biking trails, playing fields, tennis courts and cross-county skiing trails. The park also has a polo field, golf pro shop and restaurant. • Chittenango Falls State Park: Named in 2005 as one of Reserve America’s top outdoor locations, this state park features a picturesque 167-foot waterfall. Visitors can view this natural wonder from atop the falls, walk the winding trail into the gorge, witness the falls from a nearby footbridge and hike back to the summit along the small trail on the opposite side of the gorge. Take advantage of camping, hiking, fishing and picnicking facilities. • Washington’s Headquarters: For 16 months, Gen. George Washington, commander in chief of the Continental Army, made his military headquarters and residence at the Hasbrouck family’s fieldstone farmhouse in Newburgh. The Hasbrouck property, acquired and opened by New York in 1850, was the first publicly operated historic site in the United States. The museum exhibits and artifacts detail the history of the building and the events during 1782 when Washington met the challenges of the final days of the Revolution from this Hudson Valley location. • Niagara Falls State Park: Surrounding the mighty Niagara Falls, this fascinating park is the oldest state park in the United States. Hikers can explore the cascade along miles of trails and from a variety of vantage points. A trolley provides three-mile guided tours stopping at the park’s most scenic vistas and other attractions such as the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center and Visitor’s Center. Great views of the American Falls can be seen from the Observation Tower and visitors can ride the world famous Maid of the Mist or get soaked at the Cave of the Winds. NIAGARA FALLS HOTELS • Green Lakes State Park: Surrounded by an upland forest, two glacial lakes are the natural highlight of this park located just east of Syracuse. The lakes appear green because there is no mixing of surface and bottom waters. Named as one of the top 100 campgrounds in the nation by Reserve America, the park also features an 18-hole golf course, a Frisbee golf course and cross-country skiing trails in the winter. • Moreau Lake State Park: Recognized by Reserve America for its outstanding picnic areas, Moreau Lake State Park’s sparkling lake is situated among hardwood forests, pine stands and rocky ridges in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The park includes a sand beach, scenic nature, hiking and cross-country ski trails, boating, fishing and cottage rentals. • Allegany State Park, Red House Area: Known for its historic Tudor-style administration building and all activities centrally located around the Red House Lake, this state park has been recognized by Reserve America for its biking trails and campgrounds. The park provides visitors with five miles of paved bike paths, a sandy beach for swimming, fishing and hiking. The park has 130 campsites and 144 cabins to choose from.
