New Jersey: Fast, Wet & Wild

The adrenaline rush from traveling at speeds over 100 miles per hour, or a sudden splash of water while traveling on a log or winding down a slippery slide, are experiences that make for fun and excitement at any of New Jersey’s amusement and water parks.

These days in New Jersey they are faster, wetter, and wilder.

Delaware River Tubing, Inc. is a new tubing and raft riding attraction in Frenchtown. Other waterparks are Splash World Waterpark in Clementon; Mountain Creek Waterpark in Vernon; Splash Zone Interactive Water Park, Wildwood; Runaway Rapids at Keansburg Amusement Park has been renovated ;
Jenkinson's Breakwater Beach Waterpark at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights; and Six Flags Hurricane Harbor is of course one of the world’s largest water-adventure parks.

Among the amusement parks there is Clementon Amusement Park in Clementon; The Adventure Aquarium in Camden; Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson; Casino Pier; Keansburg Amusement Park; and Surfside Pier at Morey's Piers in Wildwood.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES IN NEW JERSEY

Whether the official beach season is in full stride or cooler temperatures take over, outdoor enthusiasts will find eco-opportunities are always turned on in the Atlantic City region of New Jersey. ATLANTIC CITY HOTELS

Set your own pace, from high-energy biking, canoeing and kayaking, to a leisurely bird-watching outing.

What better place to start an outdoor adventure than in the ocean, back bays or salt marshes that surround Atlantic City?

Marine life? Atlantic City has it, and you can experience it on a whale and dolphin watching excursion aboard Cruisin' 1, which sails out of Atlantic City's Historic Gardner's Basin. In addition to the Marine Mammal Cruise, Atlantic City Cruises also offers a Morning Skyline cruise, a Harbor Tour and a Cocktail Cruise.

If it's the back bays and salt marshes you prefer, educational tours are offered through the Marine Education Program at Gardner's Basin. While there, check out the 14,500 square-foot Ocean Life Center. It's a great place to see live jellyfish, poisonous and venomous species and an octopus up close and personal – behind the safety of a glass wall, of course.

If you'd rather catch the fish than look at them, the Atlantic City area's coastal waters are the perfect place for anglers to spend a fisherman's holiday. For freshwater fans, there are over 4,000 lakes, ponds, rivers and reservoirs to meet one's fishing needs.

For those who enjoy deeper waters, there's the ocean, surf, bays and tidal rivers where a great number of species abound. Striped bass, marlin, tuna, bluefish, shark, dolphin, weakfish, sea bass and flounder are just a few of the catches-of-the-day.

Canoeing and kayaking are popular on the area's waterways.
For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there's no lack of environmentally friendly activities in the Atlantic City region. For starters, you can join hundreds of bicyclists in a decades-old tradition: an early morning bike ride on the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk.

The area's parks also offer bike and hiking trails. The Lake Lenape hiking and biking trail in Mays Landing offers two miles of lakefront beauty and wildlife observation points. Atlantic County Park, in Estell Manor, features more than 15 miles of hiking trails. Naturalists offer guided hikes, which provide an overview of the park.

Southern New Jersey has more than beaches, too. The surrounding Pinelands and parks provide an array of environmental activities.

Atlantic County Park System operates 13 parks and facilities, encompassing nearly 2,000 acres of land with camping, hiking, nature study, photography, biking, boating and hunting opportunities.

Wharton State Forest, located in the heart of the New Jersey Pinelands, is a natural paradise of pine and oak woodlands interlaced with rivers, cedar swamps, bogs and some of New Jersey's most unusual and rare plant and animal species.

Belleplain State Forest in Woodbine offers over 42 miles of flat hiking trails in addition to campgrounds, horseback riding, mountain bike trails and canoe rentals. This 16,300-acre park is known for having the greatest variety of habitats in New Jersey, including salt water marshes, white cedar and mixed hardwood swamp, and oak hickory forest.

Located in Cape May Court House, a visit to Leaming's Run is a delightful and relaxing walk along winding paths. Bridges, ponds and nooks are just a part of the 25 individually designed and expertly crafted gardens.

Southern New Jersey's location on the Eastern Flyway makes it an ideal spot for bird watching. Several refuges and observatories are available.

The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanville, just across the back bays from Atlantic City and Brigantine, is 43,000-plus acres of coastal habitat actively protected and managed for migratory birds. Visitors can expect to sight blue-winged teal ducks, snow geese, Atlantic brant, diving ducks and perhaps a bald eagle, in addition to taking a leisurely 8-mile ride or walk the nature trails through wetlands and woodlands.

To many, the mention of Cape May brings to mind the Victorian grandeur of century-old homes and wrap-around porches nestled beneath the sheltering boughs of massive trees. CAPE MAY HOTELS

However, Cape May is also recognized as the second most important birding spot in North America. The Cape May Bird Observatory, A Center for Research and Education is affiliated with the New Jersey Audubon Society and offers dozens of educational opportunities. This 8,600 square foot center, surrounded by 26 acres of marsh and upland, is strategically located in Goshen, NJ, to access the natural wealth of New Jersey's Delaware Bayshore.

The Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor, a non-profit group dedicated to research, education and the protection of the coastal environment, is situated on 6,000 acres of coastal wetlands. The Institute features observation decks and towers, plus a salt marsh trail with interpretive signs and dioramas depicting life in a salt marsh.
