Montana: Discover Helena

From its gold rush past to the present, Montana’s state capital Helena is a “gold nugget” for travelers seeking adventure, recreation and history.

Modern visitors can stroll through the original gold discovery site in 1864, now Helena’s downtown area.

Visitors to Montana are drawn there by the lure of river trips, hiking, fishing, mountain biking, skiing and snowmobiling in its wide open spaces or in its majestic mountains and superb parks, scenic drives like Beartooth Highway in Montana’s Yellowstone and the Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park.

Chinook Bear Paw Battlefield is the site of the surrender of Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce Indians.



Choteau Located on US Hwy 89 on the east slope of the Rocky Mountains, Choteau offers a variety of recreation activities. The Lewis & Clark National Forest and the Bob Marshall Wilderness are accessible by several trails. For outdoor adventure there is hiking, horseback riding, camping, rock climbing, skiing and snowmobiling. This area is also known world-wide for its paleontology. The Old Trail Museum, one of the sites along the Montana Dinosaur Trail, showcases dinosaurs of the Two Medicine formation.

Culbertson The fascinating history of the "Old West" is in evidence at the Culbertson Museum and at Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, a prominent fur trading post in the 1800s.



Deer Lodge The historic Montana Prison is here. Drummond Near Drummond, Garnet Ghost Town was named for the ruby colored stones found there.



Ekalaka Home to the Carter County Museum with its rare dinosaur skeleton and paleontological exhibits. Weathering has given the soft sandstone rock formations at Medicine Rocks State Park a honeycomb look.



Flathead Valley The Flathead Lake State Park borders Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater lake in the West. The Flathead National Wild and Scenic River is one of the nation’s longest wild and scenic river systems. The six state parks located in and around Flathead Lake are Big Arm, Finley Point, West Shore, Wayfarers, Yellow Bay and Wild Horse Island.

Havre The "Havre Beneath the Streets" tour explores a recreation of history which includes a Chinese laundry, a bordello, opium den and bakery. Other attractions inlcude Fort Assinniboine, the largest military fort west of the Mississippi when it was constructed in 1879, and the Wahkpa Chu’gn Archaeology Site was a bison kill site. About 400 to 500 buffalo roam nearly 19,000 acres of natural grassland on the National Bison Range and there are elk and natural history displays at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Wildlife Visitor Center.

Poplar Located on the Fort Peck Indian reservation, Poplar is home to the Assiniboine and Sioux tribes, and offers plenty of Indian culture at the Poplar Museum and Tribal Museum.



Pryor Chief Plenty Coups State Park is the home and burial site of the last chief of the Crow tribe. A museum and exhibits interpret Crow culture.
