Kentucky: Worth its Weight in Gold

• More than $6 billion worth of gold is held in the underground vaults of Fort Knox. This is the largest amount of gold stored anywhere in the world.

• The first observance of Mother's Day was in Henderson by teacher Mary S. Wilson in 1887. It was made a national holiday in 1916.

• The great Man o' War won all of his races except one, which he lost to a horse named Upset.

• The world's longest cave, Mammoth Cave, was first promoted in 1816, making it the second oldest tourist attraction in the US, preceded only by Niagara Falls.

From the hills and hollows of eastern Kentucky through the rolling bluegrass of its heartland to the massive lakes and flatlands of the west, Kentucky has much to offer vacationers: from roller coasters to scenic tours to classical music concerts; its diverse landscape and waterways provide great opportunities for outdoor recreation and all year long, Kentucky is alive with more than 700 festivals.

Frankfort is located astride a double curve in the Kentucky River in central Kentucky and is known for one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the country. The charms of historic Frankfort have been well preserved : there are many historic homes with original furnishings, and a bourbon distillery which has been in operation since the 1850s.

Attractions in Lexington include the Kentucky Horse Park, the Thoroughbred Center and the American Saddlebred Museum. Other attractions in Lexington include the Aviation Museum of Kentucky with restored historic aircraft, artifacts and equipment and interactive displays.

Since 1875, Churchill Downs, Louisville, has been the home of the Kentucky Derby,the first leg of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred horse racing. The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory presents the history of baseball, and Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom is a full-feature theme and water park. Covington Kentucky's fourth largest city is across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. MainStrasse Village is a restored 19th-century German neighborhood where visitors are welcomed on the hour by the sounds of the 100-foot Carroll Chimes Bell Tower. 450 million years of Northern Kentucky's heritage are on display at the Behringer-Crawford Museum.
