Historic Boston Hotels

The longest continuously operating hotel in America, the legendary
Omni Parker House hotel, is located on the Freedom Trail in Boston’s downtown financial district.

It has hosted world luminaries since 1855. The hotel and its restaurants are credited with a slew of famous firsts, including Boston cream pie (the state's official dessert), Parker House rolls, and the term "scrod."  Ho Chi Minh was a busboy, and Malcolm X was a waiter. John Wilkes Booth stayed there a week before he shot Lincoln.

The hotel has a literary past. Charles Dickens was impressed with the "hot and cold bath" in his room at the Parker House on his second visit to Boston in 1867. This was the first hotel in Boston to have hot-and-cold running water and the first to have an elevator.

President Ulysses S. Grant stayed here. John F. Kennedy announced a run for Congress there in 1953 in a room since called the Press Room. Theatrical people such as Sarah Bernhardt and Joan Crawford stayed there.

Boston is not only one of America’s oldest cities, with a rich economic and social history and now the economic and cultural hub of New England ..... it is also a city attracting millions of visitors drawn by its historic neighborhoods, its cultural and sporting events.

And there is no better way for visitors to explore Boston's rich history than the red brick line along the Freedom Trail. Spirited costumed historic characters lead visitors along The Freedom Trail to 16 nationally significant historic sites, revealing stories about the people, the places, the events and the drama of the American Revolution, and sharing lively anecdotes about the vitality of contemporary Boston.

Along the Freedom Trail several of the historic taverns from the time of George Washington and the American Revolution are open to the public in downtown Boston. Next to Faneuil Hall and the popular Faneuil Hall Marketplace is Union Street, the location of the Blackstone Block. Here are America’s oldest restaurant and taverns: The Union Oyster House, the Bell In Hand Tavern and The Green Dragon Tavern.

Of more recent historical interest is the USS Constitution Museum which brings to life the stories of the individuals who authorized, built, served on and preserved USS Constitution. Through hands-on exhibits, displays of historic artifacts, computer simulated re-enactments, the Museum strives to make a personal connection to the past and the heritage of USS Constitution.

And of even more recent historical fascination is the newest CHEERS in Boston at Faneuil Hall Marketplace – the replica of the bar seen on the TV series, Cheers.

Boston Harbor Cruises has been Boston's premier ticket to ride on the harbor since 1926. It offer Boston's only three-hour catamaran whale watch, sightseeing tours and sunset cruises, Boston Harbor Island ferries, the Provincetown Fast Ferry, lighthouse tours and more. Boston Harbor Cruise's guides take you through the past, present and future of this historic city.

On the original orange and green Old Town Trolley tours – leaving at least every twenty minutes from 17 stops throughout Boston – visitors can enjoy a 100-minute, fully narrated sightseeing tour with more than 100 points of interest.

An unusual way to see something of Boston is the Boston Duck Tours – a fully narrated historic tour, which takes place in authentic WWI amphibious vehicles through the streets of Boston and into the Charles River.

The Museum of Fine Arts offers one of the greatest gifts Boston has to give - Discovery. For young and old, for first-time visitor and familiar friends, every turn yields a new experience.

The Science Museum is a world-renowned educational institution with over 400 interactive participatory exhibits featuring live animal and physical science demonstrations, courses, traveling exhibits, a computer center, the Mugar Omni Theater, and Charles Hayden Planetarium.

For children of all ages there is the New England Aquarium which hosts colorful & educational exhibits featuring more than 8,000 aquatic creatures. The New England Aquarium is also home to the Simons IMAX Theatre.

Shopping is one of the top reasons people visit Boston – and the first stop for most is the legendary Filene's Basement. First opened in 1908, Filene's Basement of Boston is the country's oldest and most renowned off-price store.

There is no shortage of hotels in Boston ..... 161 hotels at the last count with over 33,000 rooms in Greater Boston, with accommodations ranging from family suites, to romantic hideaways in luxurious properties, to budget hotels, inns, and B&Bs.
