Atlanta: Explore it with MARTA

Whether you simply call it Atlanta or by the name visitors often use, Hotlanta, the city and the surrounding metro area have something to offer almost everyone.

And the best way to explore Atlanta is with MARTA's Atlanta Tourist Loop. It is also the most convenient.

Along the way with MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) you can visit the Georgia Aquarium, High Museum of Art, CNN Center, Georgia Dome/Philips Arena, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Underground Atlanta, State Capitol, Fox Theatre, Piedmont Park, World of Coca-Cola and other major attractions, hotels, restaurants and shops.

Flying into town? MARTA connects into the terminal building at Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport with rail stations within walking distance of Atlanta's hotels. There are great rates on US hotels, motels, and inns.

To a visitor it can seem that every other street is named Peachtree, so MARTA's Visitor's Pass makes traveling around the city inexpensive and easy.

Atlanta is an agreeable juxtaposition of a big modern city with all the trappings – fine dining, museums, theater, world-class events and first-class hotels – and the Southern hospitality for which this region is so well-known.

It’s modern skyscrapers and big league sports combined with quaint neighborhoods and tree-filled parks. It’s martinis meets sweet tea and sushi and small plates next door to biscuits and gravy.

Atlanta’s destination appeal is highlighted by the unparalleled selection of attractions in and around the city.

The Georgia Aquarium is the largest in the world at 8-million gallons, 505,000 square feet, and with 100,000 freshwater and saltwater fish and mammals and 500 species.

Visitors can get a taste of today’s Atlanta by exploring the invention of the world’s most famous soft drink at the World of Coca-Cola, or going inside the studios of the world’s leader in television news at Inside CNN Atlanta.

Also can’t miss are Centennial Olympic Park, a 21-acre legacy from the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games, complete with the legendary Fountain of Rings; and Underground Atlanta, where six city blocks in the heart of Atlanta have been transformed into an urban market with restaurants, shops, and a nightlife scene that rocks until 4am.

Take advantage of a mild climate year-round at Stone Mountain Park, offering 3,200-acres of scenic, historic, recreational and leisure activities for the whole family, the 15-acre Atlanta Botanical Garden featuring one of the world’s largest permanent displays of tropical orchids or Zoo Atlanta, home to animals from around the world.

Offering an abundance of cultural opportunities, visitors to Atlanta’s many theaters, museums, galleries and concert halls can experience diverse art, drama, dance and music.

Atlanta’s world-class museums include the newly renovated and expanded High Museum of Art, the Fernbank Museum of Natural History and Imagine It! The Children’s Museum of Atlanta.

The city is also home to many performing arts theaters such as the Alliance Theatre, The Fox Theatre, Rialto Theatre for Performing Arts and the Woodruff Arts Center.

A visit to Atlanta is not complete without a stop at one of the city’s malls, outlets, antique shops or galleries. Products from around the world can be found in Atlanta, the shopper’s paradise of the Southeast. Atlantic Station is a city-within-a-city development with more than 20 eateries, 30 retailers, a movie theater, apartment and loft housing and a boutique hotel.

A city rich in history, with pivotal roles in the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, Atlanta has plenty of opportunities for visitors to discover the past first-hand. Experience the history of Atlanta’s global leaders at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum.

The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum offers a glimpse inside the life and times of the author of one of America’s most-remembered books, “Gone With the Wind.”

Or, connect with the past of Atlanta from the beginning at the Atlanta History Center, which, in addition to the current collection of exhibits, now features a 20,000-square-foot wing commemorating the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.

No other city in the country offers excitement, entertainment and enjoyment like Atlanta. Constantly on the rise, it’s a city that is always developing, paving the way for the future. In Atlanta, every day is an opening day.
